There are the requisite number of hillside pagodas and stupas to explore but they are underwhelming compared to what we have already seen. I would just as soon skip this city in order to grab more time in Bagan if "do overs" were possible. The jade market is interesting though. It is a rustic outdoor section of the city where jade sellers and buyers gather in the early mornings to do business. This tradition went on for the next couple of hundred years and, as with anyone who starts collecting things, over time you find that you have accumulated a whole lot of them; in this case thousands of shrines to Buddha in all shapes and sizes. Now one can just bicycle around the back roads of Bagan all day and explore isolated (and some very well visited) stupas, pagodas, and temples. "She was technically very precise, but lacked the passion needed for a great performance." But honestly, every performance we saw was -- moving? exhilarating? engrossing? powerful? It's an odd art form, one suitable to Seville, where beauty that has matured over the centuries is entwined with the everyday lives of the people here. Just as we were adjusting to the city and finding the best churro stands, it was off to Portugal and the windswept beaches of the Algarve. Actually, it took some time to find those windswept beaches, our hotel being located amongst the fish and chips, hamburger, ice cream, disco and casino pits in the blue-collar British tourist trap we found ourselves in. But once on the road, it was great to breathe the fresh air at what was the end of the earth for the early explorers. Octopus stew, jumbo prawns, beer, and sangria while listening to the waves pounding on shore and watching the surfers wipe out will always be a good memory. Endless miles of flawless blacktop stretch as far as the eye can see with only an occasional fellow motorist along the way enabling us to make great time, enough so to include a side trip to the land of La Mancha (Consuegra) with 300 year old windmills, cheese and azafran (saffron). From there, it was on to the Roman ruins in Merida (Temple of Diana below) after an extended tour of a Toledo suburb, courtesy of our GPS navigation system ("if possible make a U-turn" x 30). "She" also can't count worth a damn, especially at traffic circles which are ubiquitous here. But, no matter...after the recent rains, everything smells sweet and the fig, olive, pomegranate and plum trees that grow all along the country roads here are now all laden with ripe fruit to pick and we've foraged for plenty of blackberries, too.
